The Sound of Music

Today is Sunday August 20th. Yesterday we went to see a presentation at Cameco Broadway producers, Port Hope. It was called “The Sound of Music”. The music was written by Richard Rodgers, the lyrics were made by Oscar Hammerstein II and the book was written by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, based on the book Trapp Family Singers by Maria Von Trapp. The story contains many hit songs, including "Edelweiss", "My Favorite Things", "Climb Ev'ry Mountain", "Do-Re-Mi", "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" and "The Lonely Goatherd", as well as the title song. It is really more of a musical rather than a play.

The story was about a nun named Maria that wasn’t obeying rules of the nuns’ so was sent to the family of Von Trapp as a governess to seven children of Captain Georg Ritter von Trapp, a widower and a decorated commander in the former Austro-Hungarian Navy. The children, initially hostile and mischievous, come to like her, and she finds herself falling in love with the captain. He was soon to be married to Baroness Elsa Schraeder but marries Maria instead.

Maria teaches the children to sing and have fun. She also teaches them not to be scared and what to do at times. But when the Germans started attacking Austria they went to the Von Trapp’s house to search for them because Georg Von Trapp was a commander in the Austro Navy. The Von Trapps hid in the abbey with the help of the nuns and mother Abbey. Then they escaped over the mountains to Switzerland and then to Italy by train.

What I like about The Sound of Music

I never saw a real live play before and I think The Sound of Music is a very good play. What I like about it is the actors hardly make any mistakes and were not shy and they speak loudly with confidence in their voices. It is obvious that they put lots of emotion into it and use much strength and courage. That is why people want to see the play over and over again because it is so good.

My favourite part

My favourite part is when the Captain sang together with Maria and the children. The captain was so shocked by the beautifully sang song that he sang along together too.
